Not Just a Spectator at Fairs and Festivals

By Sam Weyland

If you have been reading some of my earlier articles, you'll be able to tell that I am an absolute nut over craft fairs. They are independent events, with people of differing talents offering just as differing crafts. Sometimes, there's even a full-blown festival. Really, it's just an amazing experience, simultaneously fun and spiritual.

Although I have given advice on selling your crafts at fairs like these, I am forced to admit that I have never sold anything of mine at craft fairs before. I've been getting second hand information from friends of mine who are the craft-making sort; just think of me as an avid fan of theirs.

With that in mind, there will be some who'll think that second hand information unreliable until I've actually had experience selling these items myself. I believe that is somewhat untrue; a lot of writers carefully observe the topic they're writing about without getting hands-on experience. Still, to appease the minds of these people and show I am qualified, I made up my mind to sell a few items at a craft show myself.

The first question in my head is: what do I sell? Aside from attending craft shows on a regular basis, my only other area of interest is polished concrete. Quite useful and very elegant, if I may say so, but not really something you can display at a craft show booth, right? I'm sure, though, I would be able to look back to my roots and find a talent. But at the moment, however, I do not have the time to. I then just decided to start up a booth of my friends' crafts and see where it leads me.

As it happened, everything went swimmingly. I followed the advice I've been giving people on my older posts; I checked up on various scheduled fairs, and I went for the one which offered the best package for their booths. Next week, I start selling crafts from three of my skilled friends; then we'll see how the actual selling really is. - 15790
