How to Use and Profit From Opt-in EMail Marketing

By Fred Raley

Every business can benefit from a opt-in email marketing campaign. By 'getting opt-in prospects' for your email marketing campaign, you will send info only to people interested in your product or service. The click-through or order rate will be much higher due to the opt-in-based approach.

Essentially, while different people may explain it differently, opt-in email marketing is simply another form of advertising. The logic behind this approach is that you advertise directly to those who have requested information regarding your products or services, or those who have an interest in similar products or services.

Of course, one should apply proper business ethics because providing you adhere to all the rules, opt-in email marketing is 100% legal. Likewise, you are free to continue sending advertising material to those who chose to opt-in for as long as you wish so long as the material relates to the products or services you earlier described. As long as you don't start sending irrelevant material, those on your opt-in list won't feel as though you're abusing their trust in you.

Always keep your topics relevant to that which your subscribers expect. If your opt-in email marketing campaign is supposed to be about coupons and discounts from "Mike's Pizzaria" and you send an email to them about hardware specials at "Joe's Hardware", you might disappoint your readers. Use your opt-in email marketing campaign responsibly for best results. Give your prospects what they signed up for all the time.

Using the expertise of your marketing department or a third part expert marketing firm, you will collect the contact information from your prospects into what is called an autoresponder. An autoresponder is a very simple piece of software that you use via your web browser (like Firefox or Internet Explorer). The prospect's information is collected usually by a form on a website (see below for an example) where the prospect will put their name in and get the information back via your free eMail opt-in autoresponder. The persons information goes into the autoresponder which can be preprogrammed to send out emails at specific times or on an ad-hoc basis on subjects of interest to your potential clients.

The importance of an autoresponder in any business simply cannot be stressed enough, particularly if you want to see an increase in sales. Once your prospects have decided to opt-in, you're free to send them relevant advertising material, including free goods, special promotion or attractive discounts.

So, is it only online businesses that use opt-in email marketing? The answer to that is a very definite "no" because even the likes of Microsoft, Red Bull, Coco-Cola, etc, all use this form of advertising. I myself receive emails from some of them, having chosen to opt-in. Of course this is not to say that only large companies can take advantage of the endless opportunities. In fact, opt-in marketing knows no borders with regards to the size of your business.

Is opt-in email marketing suitable for home businesses? It most certainly is, providing of course that the type of home business you have can be marketed via the internet.
