Due to the influx of unemployed, the job boards have become cluttered with people looking to find their next high paying career.
One can often feel like they are sorting through more scams than they are legitimate jobs and the ones they do find have too many applicants for them to stand apart. I feel we have forgotten however the one thing that can truly set us apart from the competition, a referral.
The first thing to do when looking for a new career is get out a pad of paper and list every relationship that you can attempt to leverage. Old work acquaintances, family, friends, friends father or friend of a friend of a former friend, leave none out.
Ok, so now you have the list. The next step is putting that list to work and getting in touch with each of these people. Take a moment and think about how to approach each person as they will all be different dependign on the realationship.
No text messages or emails in this part. You are going to be asking these people for a favor, so you will want to place a call or meet each one of these people in person.
Things to remember when approaching the contact. Be professional and courteous of the contact's time. Let them know that you are currently looking for a new career and that you were one of the first people you thought of for whatever reason you want to insert here...etc...etc.
Be clear on what it is you are asking them to do and then set a follow up time to talk about the results whether it be an interview or just an inquiry into open positions.
This in my experience is the best way to obtain a good job quickly and can save you a lot of time and headaches.
So before you spend countless hours on the internet searching the job boards, take a minute to leverage your relationships and you many not need the job boards at all! - 15790
