Are we in the UK drowning in Debt? According to the insurer AXA, some 11.6 million people (25 per cent of the adult population) are said to be struggling financially with a significant number, around 1.3 million people, admitting their finances are entirely out of control.

The insurer goes on to say that over a million UK residents have borrowed too much credit and are now struggling to keep up their repayments, with less than 4 million struggling to manage their credit card bills.

Half a million home owners have been threatened with a bailiff or eviction and personal county court judgements CCJs has increased in quarter 3 to their highest level since the start of 2007

In England and Wales CCJs rose by 17.4 per cent year on year to 223,519, their highest level since the first quarter of 2007, according to figures published by the Registry Trust, the public interest company which manages the register of judgements, orders and fines on behalf of the Lord Chancellor. This represents an increase of 24.8 per cent from the second quarter of 2008.

Individuals entering into insolvency within the borders of England and Wales are on the up by nearly 9 per cent or just over twenty seven thousand in the 3rd part of 2008 compared with the previous quarter.

Bankruptcies and Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) have increased 12 and 3 percent respectively.

The treacherous economic conditions for people and business has created a rise in corporate and personal insolvency and the worsening economy is making the prospect of a further rise in insolvency further predictable through 2009.

Unfortunately the planned Simplified Individual Voluntary Arrangement SIVA, due out next year has been abandoned by the Insolvency Service

Where an IVA needed 75 per cent of creditors to accept the proposal for insolvency a Simplified IVA or SIVA only required that a majority accept the terms. The SIVA was intended to be launched next year with a creditor cap of 75,000.

How To Set Up A Tickler File

As part of my ongoing GTD Thirty Day Challenge, I wanted to talk about how you should set up a tickler file.

David Allen seems to be big on using 43 folders for his tickler file. These folders would be made up of 12 monthly folders and 31 daily folders. Let's say it is now January and I'd have all my daily folders behind the January folder. When a day ends, that day's folder goes behind the next month or February's folder. Looking at the 19th, I'd have the folders 1-18 behind the February folder at this point.

How does this work? Let's say I got a bill today that I was due on February 3. Since it's important that I remember, I would put it in the February 3rd folder. When February 3 arrives, I would look in my tickler file and it reminds me to pay the bill.

I really do not like using 43 folders for my tickler file. For starters, it's hard to remember to check it every day. People then have to remember to check it and they'll start to ask themselves "how do I remember to check my tickler file?" The next reason is it is very bulky and not very portable. Finally, when you move the daily folders behind the next month, you have to remember to move the items in that months folders to the proper day.

The tickler file is essential to your GTD set up, however, because you have to remember future items. If you have a lot of physical items then the tickler file is the way to go. In my case, I don't have tons of physical items and so here is my solution to the above problems with a tickler file.

How To Set Up A Tickler File

First, I put a plastic folder in my briefcase called "Waiting For" that holds all of the stuff I might need to remember to check on a future date.

After that, I would create a folder in my email setup called "Yahoo Reminders". If you look at my folder setup in my other article called How To Set Up Your GTD email, you can see how I have this set up. I then filter all of my Yahoo reminders into this folder and they bypass my inbox.

The last component is Yahoo calendar. I put any item I need to remember and enter it as an all day event. I attach and email reminder to it that sends me a reminder 2 days ahead of the day I need to remember it. As a second reminder, a text is sent too.

In the above example, the bill I got needed to be remembered on February 3rd. I enter the all day event on the third like "Pay very important bill" and by default it sends me an email reminder two days before it occurs. The actual physical bill goes into my "Waiting For" folder in my briefcase.

On the 1st day of February, I get a Yahoo reminder that reminds me about the bill that needs to be paid on the third and it goes directly into my Yahoo reminder folder in my email account. In addition, a text goes out as well giving me a backup on my blackberry in case I can't get to my Yahoo reminder's folder in my email account. I review my blackberry text messages every day and review my reminders folder too as well if I have access to it.

This system works fantastic for me. It's extremely portable, it reminds me automatically and I don't have to rethink the items in my tickler when I move the tabs. If you are not using email reminders to help you remember stuff, you have no idea how this can effect your productivity. Even if you use 43 folders, I recommend email reminders 100% to be a part of your GTD system.

Let me guess, you didn't get anyone to join last year with all those old scholl ways? But you won't tell them that, your just hungry for your first sale.

Oh, the integrity I find sometimes in this industry. You know, you would be so much better off to learn how to be a real leader, and learn what it takes to run a first rate network opportunity. The amount of salary one makes throughout their lifetime career and the subsequent lifestyle and quality of life as a result of that income depends a lot on the amount of salary a person negotiates before their first day on the job.

This should be considered whether it is a first job out of school or a mid-career job change. Beyond that, there are impacts even when you are working for an employer that you are very happy with. Not engaging in salary negotiation at the right time can have real financial impact.

Throughout your career, you may earn pay raises and promotions within the company that you work for, but for example, when the company offers scheduled raises, as many companies do, the impact of the starting salary with that company is huge.

This is not only applicable to your first salary negotiation and subsequent incremental pay raises but also to salary differentials you may get when you changes roles within a company. You may switch into a job requiring significantly increased duties, effort, or responsibilities, and the salary you had earned beforehand can genuinely influence the starting salary at the new job.

Take a person starting a career as a system analyst in a high tech company somewhere in the United States, as an example. Say that person begins with a starting salary of $45,000. Most likely that person will have to dedicate at least 6 months to one full year before they are offered their first raise. Suppose it is a 10% raise which would be A LOT in most businesses. That person would gain an additional $4500 yearly based on that raise.

Now imagine that same employee started at $55,000 or even higher. That same pay raise of 10% would provide the same person $5500 additional salary per year. With the first salary, the employee would still be under the $50,000 level after one full year of work and after a 10% pay raise, while in the second scenario the employee would be at over $60,000 per year after a 10% raise.

Now analyze the compound repercussion of these two starting salaries on the individuals earning potential. First let's examine a 4 year timeline, all other things being equal (that is, suggesting no pay increases and no job advances). The person earning $45K will have earned $180K in total salary in 4 years. The person earning $55K will have earned $220K in 4 years. That is a $40K difference just based on where the employee started in terms of negotiated compensation.

Introduce the 10% raise after year one and consider the impact as the person continues through their career. The person with a better salary in the beginning will always be ahead of the person with the lower starting salary, ceteris parabis (i.e. same job, same performance). The person with the higher salary negotiation will be inching ahead faster than the person starting with the lower salary. This impact accelerates with each passing year assuming the same % annual pay raise for each.

When negotiating a pay raise, if an employee earning $50,000 earns a 5% raise without negotiating anything extra, that might acceptable. Now consider the impact if the person gets a 15% pay raise because they have been a superstar in the job and they have all the supporting market facts and a performance record to justify it. That employee will have negotiated compensation - $7,500 in an increase versus just accepting $2500. Project that 10 years into the future, and there is a blatant $50,000 impact on the person's earnings.

Many experts feel it goes without saying that it is better to try negotiating a raise or an improvement to the compensation package than to simply accept what is offered. The first offer is usually the lowest offer and can be improved upon. This negotiation must be done with masterful skills and must be well founded with a supporting case for the increase.

We must also consider factors such as the job market, company guidelines, and on the job performance. However when well executed, it can really pay off. Remember to consider the importance of all factors of compensation when in salary negotiation. Some people truly value their spare time and quality of life, while others are willing to venture out and accept stock options instead of extra salary.
