Wearing A Navy Blue Suit

By Victor R. Santerino

In some lights, navy blue can appear almost black. That's because it's such a dark shade of blue, so named due to the color worn by sailors of the British Royal Navy in the 18th Century.

Jackets of this color are still the favorite item sported by yachtsmen, and can be suitably worn to many social functions. Blazers alone are sometimes embroidered with particular items or designs of interest to the wearer. The aforementioned yachtsmen often wear blazers embroidered with gold braid, resembling ropes.

However, these suits are not only for the social dresser. A well-designed, navy blue business suit can look very smart, and is easily complimented with tasteful accessories.

It is important that the color of your tie has a good contrast with your suit. Colors that work well with this color would be varying shades of red and pink, or even lighter shades of blue. One ideal combination would be a navy blue suit, paired with a white shirt and pale blue tie.

Obviously you should create a look of your own. Experiment with shirts, ties and accessories until you're happy with the impression you give. Perception, that being how you are seen by others, is a big factor.

You've heard people say that first impressions are what really count. This statement is very true. Don't let your look be ruined by picking out the wrong shirt or tie. Be sure to take the time to look your best in your navy blue suit.

There is really only one color shoe that can safely be worn with a navy blue men's suit, and that is black. Anything else simply doesn't work. Brown shoes in any tone other than very dark will provide too much of a contrast to the suit, and draw the eye towards them.

Don't misunderstand though. You can easily mix and match your look to suit your situation. For business meetings, choose a formal look of a plain shirt and contrasting tie. For social occasions, choose a lighter shirt, even a light, relaxed patterned shirt will work fantastically with your navy blue suit. - 15790
