How to save gas

By Cheryl L. True

Because of the recession and the high price of gas, people are looking for ways to save money and gas. Here are some tips to consider:

Check your engine. Car efficiency will decline with poor tuning. Get a tune-up to save gas.

Don't leave your car for a long time after starting the engine. Starting your car consumes more gas than just leaving it idle. If you need to stop and do something for just a moment, don't shut your car off; keep it running.

Sticking to the speed limit can improve gas mileage. Don't drive fast in low gear. This consumes a lot more gas than getting it into the next gear. If you have a stick shift, take advantage of this and don't get it into the next gear as soon as possible.

Take out excess weight in your trunk. Spare tires, tools, anything that weighs down your car will cause you to use much more gas than normal. Around town, or within reasonable ranges where you don't necessarily need your extra spare or excess equipment, is ideal for saving a few bucks every time out.

Check your air filter. Changing it can improve your gas consumption. If you have a dirty air filter, it will restrict the flow of the air into the engine, which will hurt your fuel economy and affect the performance of your car. An easy way to check is to simply remove the air filter and hold it up to a light source (the sun works well). If you can't see any light coming through, then you need a new filter. There are permanent filters which can be simply cleaned instead of changed. This is better for the environment and helps you save you money and gas.

Pick a better route. Stay away from routes with a bunch of traffic lights and with heavy traffic. Just because you choose a short route doesn't mean you'll be saving the most gas. But, if you don't have to stop a lot, then definitely choose the shortest route.
